Green Damn Youth Escort

Today's Wall Street Journal has a provocative story headlined China Squeezes PC Makers: Beijing Is Set to Require Web Filter That Would Block Government-Censored Sites.

The picture above comes from the official website for "Green Dam Youth Escort," the software which according to the Journal, PC makers will be required to distribute along with their products sold in China. You can download it here, read the latest news about it here, and participate in a user forum here. The picture shows children sitting at their computers, being sheilded by a screen labeled "Green Dam Youth Escort green web surfing filtering software," held up by arms labeled "government" and "finance." The nasty looking black globls say "harmful website" and "harmful information."

According to this press release dated June 8th China time, after a period of testing and evaluation, the "Green Dam Youth Escort" software received government blessing in April to be made available for free public download. The press release says that the software has been downloaded over 3 million times since the end of March and is being used by approximately 2279 schools, with installation in nearly 518 thousand computers. It also says that 6957 websites have installed the software. It says that the Ministry of Information Industry is working with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance, and the State Council Information Office to get the software installed in primary and middle schools across the country. The final sentence of the press release also announces the companies including Lenovo, Inspur, and Hedy have agreed to pre-install "Green Dam Youth Escort" in their products, with the software already installed in more than 52.7 million units. No foreign companies are mentioned.

According to the Journal:

The software was developed by Jinhui Computer System Engineering Co., with input from Beijing Dazheng Human Language Technology Academy Co.

Bryan Zhang, founder of Jinhui, said Green Dam operates similarly to software designed outside China to let parents block access to Web content inappropriate for children. Some computers sold in China already come with parental-control software, but it isn't government-mandated.

Mr. Zhang said his company compiles and maintains the list of blocked sites, which he says is limited to pornography sites. He said the software would allow the blocking of other types of content, as well as the collection of private user data, but that Jinhui would have no reason to do so. He also said the software can be turned off or uninstalled.

His company plans to transmit new banned addresses to users' PCs through an Internet update system similar to that used by operating-system software and antivirus programs.

The software requirement was outlined in a notice that was issued by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on May 19 but that hasn't yet been publicized by state media. The notice, a copy of which was seen by The Wall Street Journal, says PC makers must ship PCs to be sold in China as of July 1 with the Green Dam software "preloaded" -- pre-installed or enclosed on a CD.

The notice says PC producers will be required to report to the government how many PCs they have shipped with the software. The notice doesn't mention any punitive action for noncompliance.

The Journal also reports that the software can be disabled. I hope the Citizenlab or somebody will do a thorough test to answer at least two questions: How extensive is the list of filtered terms and does it really contain no political content as Mr. Zhang claims? Furthermore, how is the user information being collected and where is it being stored? Is it similar to the TOM-Skype system?

The Journal has reported that PC makers have the option to provide the software on disk with the computer instead of providing it pre-installed. If companies really are going to be required by Chinese law to provide this software with their products, it would make sense to appeal and lobby for the right to provide their own equivalent products (Microsoft Windows, for instance, already offers extensive parental controls - why are more needed?) If that fails, based on what I know now, companies wanting to adhere to the Global Network Initiative principles on free expression and privacy should at very minimum do the following (NOTE: THIS REPRESENTS MY OWN OPINION ONLY):
Provide the software on disk rather than pre-installed.
Include clear information to the user about what the software does, the nature and range of content it filters, how the user's personal information is collected and transmitted, where it is stored and who has access to it.
Explain what the software does differently from existing parental controls already included in the operating system.
Include further information about any further vulnerabilities the software contains which could open the user's computer to attack or snooping.
Provide clear instructions on how to deactivate or uninstall the software along with the installation guidelines.

The point is to give the user as much information as possible so that he or she can make informed decisions about how to use (or opt not to use) the technology which the PC manufacturers are required by the government to include with their product.

The information on the "Green Dam Youth Escort" focuses on youth and schools, and the need to protect China's children from all the inappropriate content, predators, and other bad things that abound on the Internet. Of course, the argument over how far we should go in censoring the Internet in school systems - along with who decides what gets censored and to whom they are accountable - is not limited to authoritarian countries. A speaker at the Computers Freedom and Privacy conference in Washington DC last week pointed out that the ACLU is suing two Tennessee school districts in federal court for "unconstitutionally blocking students from accessing online information about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues." The case apparently came to light when a young man searching for information about college scholarships for lesbian and gay students discovered that the websites he wanted to access were blocked at his school.

The scale (national as opposed to certain school districts) as well as the extent to which Internet filtering is un-transparent and unaccountable is obviously several magnitudes greater in China. But the whole argument about civil liberties vs. "protecting our children" is universal - and very much unresolved around the globe, even in the most ostensibly liberal and democratic societies. Companies are going to need to come up with globally consistent strategies to deal with government demands for censorship, from China to Australia (which has been testing out its own government-mandated filtering) and everywhere in-between. Free expression and human rights advocates - not to mention policymakers - also need to have globally consistent positions. Otherwise it's just too easy for the Chinese [or insert another country name here] government to dismiss their criticisms and concerns as yet another predictable application of Western "double standards."

Damn pissed off with Keng Chee. He wants me to do the English project by the 11th June. Screw man. This is so unreasonable. Moreover, the script sucks. It's so formal. Even Shukiat knows how to add humor, albeit only about human anatomy. (Please note that this is a script for a skit)

A very good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Today, we’ll be examining an important issue which affects Singapore’s status as a world-class city with people having excellent upbringing, consideration and courtesy for others. Well you may ask, what is so important? Now, please kindly look at this picture (young couple kissing on MRT). What do you see? Yes, it’s a picture of 2 teenagers showing their affection to each other on the MRT train. Well, you may say, “What is so great about kissing on a MRT train, I’ve done it before!” However, there are indeed many implications and important values in our society which opposes such misdeeds of inconsideration. Not only that, this is just one of the acts in public areas, which reflects Singaporean’s inconsideration towards others around them.

Our public transport system has always been widely-lauded by many people for being clean and efficient. However, during the course of this project, we have observed many individuals commit acts that tarnish this good image. (maybe a dialogue with someone) Being a commuter myself, and having seen all these unsightly acts, I believe that it is of utmost importance to improve the situation with regards to acts of public annoyances on Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) trains and make people understand the importance of displaying considerate behaviour on public transport.

Please imagine yourself being shoved and pushed while you were trying to get out of the train. How would you feel? How would the elderly feel if this happened to them? Inconsiderate acts such as shoving the elderly have always been widely-discussed on local online forums. The possibility of these acts affecting the image of Singapore as a progressive first-world country is probably the main reason for Singaporeans to be so concerned. However, in my own opinion, this is an issue that we’ve to tackle ourselves. By shoving these alighting senior citizens aside while boarding the train, we’re being extremely rude and signifying that we Singaporeans do not care for the elderly, but are self-centred and selfish. Although this may not be true, it will affect how we’re portrayed in other people’s eyes.

Nvm. Today's topic! SHUKIAT. No he didn't do anything to me to make me blog this. Rather, he wrote lies and lies and lies.

You all will know about SHUKIAT's Drama Portfolio.
Firstly, we shall understand what type of person shukiat is.

1. Stubborn.
2. Dramatic in the bad way
3. Phat.
4. Stupid.
5. Liar.

If i were to put down the full list, it would go on forever and ever and ever.

Do you like hypocrites? I dun like them, although i am on sometimes.

Now in this case its totally different. Shukiat's not a hypocrite. He's a hypocrite that has mastered the art to the highest level. In addition to being a hippo.

We all know how much work shukiat did regarding the play. We all know how cooperative he is and was. We all know he slacks more than anyone else in the class. We can see from his drama portfolio how much a hypocrite he is.

The drama portfolio - sumthing u write down all the things you have done or what happened in the play.
The play - Merchant of venice.
What shukiat did - nothing.
What he said he did - almost everything.

What i hate most about that is that he puts other people down in his portfolio, and make him appear good. Although he is actually truthfully a devil in disguise. Or worse.

That was the introduction. Now to the nicer parts.

The first entry he did for the portfolio.

The birth of the Play (stage 1)

Shukiat writes that he was interested in the play from the start.

Do you think he was?

He writes that he took the project far more seriously and somemore hopes his classmates would too.

Same question.

He wrote that he wanted to get an acting position so he could get marks for the class.

He wouldnt have gotten marks for us would he.

He says he was composed when he was supposedly not chosen for the acting role.

Yea he was composed. If you call screaming yelling shouting and making a huge fuss composed. And we didnt offer shukiat the acting role did we? Didnt he go "No i dont want" and try to really be overly humble.

He says that after encouragement from the teacher, he decided to put in his 100% effort into whatever he did.

He did nothing. Doesnt that just explain everything.

Then the pro shukiat goes on to talk about his contributed idea to the play. And says that kenneth supposedly felt that the idea that was used finally was ridiculous and a joke.

Shukiat starts putting in as many "i"s, "my"s, "me"s in this part as possible. The only part where he can.
We learn that a good way to voice out what you really think is to put words in other people's mouths.

The next thing shukiat wrote.

My Role (individual stage)

The title itself is hypocritical. Shukiat did nothing. Does he have a role?

Shukiat talks about the problems he faced trying to complete his individual tasks.

Did he have any?

Shukiat say that he quickly completed his individual part in the advertisment comittee.

Yea we all know he did. He can complete slacking anytime.

Then he goes on to say that the other comittees were struggling with their work. And that many of the poster group's memebers were slacking and refused to work.

Look who's talking.

And now a direct quote. "i decided to help them, obviously taking a big risk as if they do badly, my marks would be pulled down too as i am a committee member too."

The only time anybody's marks wont be pulled down would be when shukiat actually does anything.

Then shukiat writes about sticking his nose into yet another comittee.

We all remember when shukiat was really pissed with kevin for being extra to do work for the other comittees. We do not think shukiat is being hypocritical here.

Shukiat starts to use "we" and starts saying that kevin was always trying to do everything himself. And talks about how much he was frustrated when kevin did all the work by himself. And called him extra and stuff.

Firstly, he shouldnt use "we", since they didnt need shukiat in the first place. Then who self appoints himself as leader more? Kevin or shukiat?

Hey we get to the amusing part!

Direct quote. "I was chosen as an understudy for the project, but i still was as enthusiastic or even more than the actors themselves. The day i got the script, i memorised it and was prepared for anything ahead."

Did shukiat willingly become an understudy? Remember, he DID NOT make a big fuss when he did not want to be the actor. Then he gets the script. 3 weeks after he gets the script, there is a rehearsal that involved the understudy(s), did he screw up? No hor...

Another direct quote. "I attended all the acting sessions and watched as they acted."

We should change the statement to, "I attended all the acting sessions except for one which was during the holidays, and i was not free, and the other acting sessions were during english lessons so i had to go no matter how much i did not want to."

Then shukiat trys to pull weixiang down. After trying first to pull kenneth down, then kevin, then the poster comittee. He talks about weixiang not telling anyone he was buying props for the class.

Shukiat joins the props committee in this part. He helps poor alastair in the props. He flames weixiang for not telling anyone that he was buying props. But we should know that shukiat obviously did not listen in class when weixiang told everyone.

Then, The Development of the Play (stage 3)

Direct quote again. Shukiat now talks about the rehearsal in the holidays that he "attended".
"The lighting group REFUSED to accept comments and suggestions by fellow classmates and i personally feel that this is a major flaw. They failed to be cooperative with the class, refusing to do their part, thus slowing down the class and of course wasting our time, which was very precious."

Firstly, i am in the lightings group. And now i will shoot down slowly every single thing shukiat said wrongly.

We did not refuse to accept comments. All the times kenneth, the director, was standing up there talking to us wasnt accepting comments.
The only major flaw in this project was to include shukiat's name in the list of members.
We failed to be cooperative and refused to do our part. No we didnt do anything. The lights you all saw that day was lightning.
The only guy who did not do anything was... *erkhem*
Shukiat wasnt there anyway so how did we waste his time?
Shukiat's time isnt precious.

And finally. Problems in the Process (conclusion)

Shukiat talks about the problems. He knows very well.

Direct quote "The lack of a leader also caused organisation problems. Without a leader, the distribution of work could not be done and members did not know what to do and nothign was done. This problem was solved when some members self appointed themselves as leaders and took the task of distributing work, which i felt was very admirable."

Look who was criticizing kevin earlier on about self appointing leaders.

Book review =)

From this piece of literature text(shukiat's drama portfolio), we can learn about the real nature of a person. And how hypocritical anything can get. I feel that this text has impacted me greatly and that a person should not criticize people for things they do themselves. I will introduce this piece of writing which has the beautiful writing method of bringing people down to my friend, so that they can all learn from this piece of crap. NO. I think what shukait wrote was total CRAP. And i think such people should go and shoot themselves. Because they just should. I give shukiat's drama portfolio full marks! For it being the portfolio that clearly illustrates the methods of bringing people down while writing fluently.

Total shit.

Anyway shukiat, if you ever chance upon this, this wasnt meant for your eyes.

So fun...and tiring/

I was one of the runners (No, not that not illegal bookie type, you bastard). RGS flag off first, first lower sec than 5 minutes later, upper sec. 5 minutes later, we will flagged off. Within 1 minute, Leonard, Conon and I overtook more than 50- RG slackers.(Hey we were first, you know). By the time we returned to RGS, we counted no more than 5 RGS girls there...which means (~)never mind.

Pro. Shu Kiat dedicated black parade to me. Guess what he said. " I love you brian" Yucks.

My gay phrase is "I love boys with big muscles". LOL.

I spent 3 hours or so playing squash. I realised I suck alot at squash, but at least I can hit. Hard.

If you like the Old Chang Kee Curry Puff, bet you will like this also. This stall in Ang Mo Kio Central - Tip Top Curry Puff, sells nothing but curry puffs, 1 for $1. It is located at the coffee shop just right behind the Jubilee Cinema. As can be seen from the picture above, it had won many awards, and was voted as the best food in Ang Mo Kio by a TV program too.

What's so good about it? Personally, one thing i like about it is that it is always hot when i bought it, and it is also due to its popularity that many people are buying it, and they are constantly producing more to meet the demand.

The ingredients consists of chicken meat, potatoes and egg, as usual, but the taste is much better than what you get from other curry puffs. The proportion of the chicken is also much more than what you get from other curry puffs where you can hardly find any trace of it at all. However, if you were to ask what is the factor which distinguished the curry puffs from this stall, i would say is its freshness, fresh from the fryer. It's hot, it's fresh, that's the key.

Oh yeah, the satay beehoon there rocks too! Haha!
